What is a video compressor?
Video compressor is the name for a tool that makes a video file smaller by re-encoding it at a lower bitrate, so the same clip uses less storage and uploads in less time. Compression levels and what each one targets
Most video compressor online tools hide these numbers behind a single slider. VidPackit asks the encoder for a target bitrate derived from your own file: target bitrate = source bitrate × factor.

The target is also clamped to the source: the encoder is never asked for a higher bitrate than the file already uses, so a compressed video does not come back larger than the one you started with. At the Original level, audio the target container can carry is copied over untouched instead of re-encoded.
One exception. Chrome cannot encode AAC below 96 kbps, so a track already under that is raised to the floor rather than squeezed further. Every other case keeps the percentages above.
Privacy and security
Compression happens inside the page you have open. The video is read with the File API, decoded and encoded by your browser through WebCodecs, and written back to your device. No copy goes to VidPackit or anywhere else.
You can check that yourself in about a minute:
- Open the Network tab in your browser dev tools, then compress a file. No request carries your video data.
- Turn off your Wi-Fi after the page has loaded. The tool keeps working, because it does not need a connection.
- Close the tab and the file is gone. Nothing is kept on a server because nothing was ever uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing a video reduce its quality?
Lowering the bitrate always removes some detail; that is what makes the file smaller. The Original level keeps the source bitrate and copies audio over untouched when the container allows it. High targets 70% of the source video bitrate and leaves audio alone, while Medium and Low trade more detail for a smaller file. Every level prints its target bitrate before you start, so you can compare them on your own video.

Is there a file size limit?
We do not set one. The real ceiling is your device memory, because the whole file is processed in the browser instead of on a server. A phone or a low-memory laptop will struggle with a multi-gigabyte clip that a desktop handles fine.
Which browsers work?
Desktop Chrome and Edge. They ship the complete WebCodecs support this kind of in-browser encoding needs. Other browsers show a warning above the tool, and formats they cannot encode are greyed out.
Can I convert instead of compressing?
Both are one screen apart. Leave the level on Original to repackage the video into another container, or pick High, Medium or Low to shrink it. If the audio is all you need, extracting the audio track as an MP3 saves just the soundtrack.
